Docking stations, hubs, and adapters all solve the same basic problem — too few ports on a modern laptop — but they're not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one usually means discovering a missing port or an unsupported display resolution after it's already on your desk. Here's what actually determines which one you need.
The single most important compatibility question is what port your laptop actually has, since it determines which docks will work at all.
Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5 ports (marked with a small lightning-bolt icon next to the USB-C port) support the widest range of docks, including the highest-bandwidth multi-display models. A Thunderbolt dock will generally also work in a USB-C-only port, but at reduced capability — fewer displays, lower resolution, or slower data speeds.
USB-C without Thunderbolt still supports most single- and dual-display docks, just not the most demanding multi-4K configurations.
USB-A only (older laptops) rules out true docking stations entirely, but USB-A hubs and adapters still work for adding ports, and DisplayLink-based USB-A docks can add a second display without Thunderbolt.
This is the second filter, and it narrows the list fast. A dock rated for one external display at 4K is a very different product from one that drives two.
For a single-monitor setup, a straightforward multiport adapter or a compact dock is usually enough and costs less. For a dual-monitor workstation, you need a dock explicitly rated for two independent displays at your target resolution and refresh rate — driving two 4K60 monitors takes meaningfully more bandwidth than one, and not every dock that lists "dual display" support can do it at full resolution.

Many docks can charge your laptop through the same cable that connects everything else, which means one less cable on the desk — but only if the dock's power delivery (PD) wattage is high enough for your laptop. A dock supplying 60W won't fully power a laptop that needs 90W or 100W under load; it'll still work, just drawing partly from the battery over time.
Check your laptop's charger rating (printed on the original power brick) and match or exceed it if you want the dock to fully replace your charger.
A hub is simpler than a dock: it splits one port into several of the same or similar type (a USB-C hub adding more USB-C and USB-A ports), without necessarily adding video output or high power delivery. Hubs are cheaper and fine if you just need more of the same ports.
A docking station goes further, typically adding video output, Ethernet, and higher-wattage charging in one unit, closer to a permanent desk setup than something you'd carry daily.
An HDD/SSD docking station is a different product category entirely — it's for connecting a bare hard drive or SSD to a computer via USB, not for connecting a laptop to peripherals. If you're trying to plug in a loose drive rather than add ports to a laptop, that's what you actually want.
