Electrostatic discharge (ESD) — the same static shock you might feel touching a doorknob — can silently damage or degrade sensitive electronic components at a fraction of the voltage a person can even feel. ESD protection isn't one product but a small system: bags for storage and shipping, mats for the work surface, and straps for the person handling the parts. Here's how the pieces fit together.
A static discharge that a person can feel is typically around 3,000 volts. Many sensitive electronic components can be damaged by discharges as low as 10-100 volts — far below what's noticeable, which means damage can happen silently during ordinary handling, with the failure only showing up later, sometimes well after the part is already installed.
This is why ESD protection is standard practice anywhere sensitive components are stored, shipped, or handled, not just an extra precaution for obviously fragile parts.
Not all "anti-static" bags offer the same level of protection, and the terms are often used loosely.
Static shielding bags (metallized, often silver-colored) offer full Faraday-cage protection, blocking external static fields from reaching the contents entirely. This is the standard for shipping and storing genuinely sensitive components.
Static dissipative bags slowly bleed away static charge rather than fully blocking it, offering a lower level of protection — adequate for less sensitive items but not a substitute for shielding bags on components that need full protection.
When in doubt about which level a component needs, a shielding bag is the safer default.
An anti-static mat gives components a safe, grounded surface to sit on during handling or repair work, controlling static buildup at the workstation itself rather than just at the moment a part is bagged. Mats are typically connected to a proper ground point via a grounding cord and snap.
Size the mat to your actual workspace — a compact mat is fine for occasional handling at a single bench, while a larger mat makes sense for a dedicated repair or assembly station where components are frequently set down and moved around.
A grounding wrist strap connects directly to the person handling the components, continuously discharging static from their body to ground rather than relying on them to remember to touch a grounded surface before picking anything up. This is the most direct protection for hands-on component handling and repair work.
For a complete setup, a wrist strap is normally used together with a grounded mat — the strap protects what you're holding, the mat protects what's sitting on the bench.
