How to choose
- Work out the rack units (U) you need. One U is 44.45 mm (1.75 in) of height, and standard equipment mounts in a 19-inch width.
- Check the depth of your deepest equipment and choose a rack with enough room behind it for cables.
- Check the weight rating of the rack and of any shelves, especially for servers and UPS units.
- Plan cable management early. Cable arms, brush panels and organizers keep airflow clear.
- Use blanking panels to fill empty spaces, which helps airflow and cooling inside the rack.
Frequently asked questions
What does 1U mean?
One rack unit is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) of vertical space. A 42U rack has 42 of these slots.
What is the difference between an open-frame rack and a rack cabinet?
An open-frame rack gives easy access and airflow. A cabinet has panels and doors for security and dust protection.
Why use blanking panels?
They close empty rack spaces so air flows through the equipment, which improves cooling.
